Haiku

walking slowly
on an old path as autumn strikes
like monsoon lightning

· · ·

early morning clouds
paint the old bright sky with
flying water birds

· · ·

One lone elk bugles
in the starry darkness.
Blessed solitude....

· · ·

Fluting away on a moonless night,
I wait breathlessly for his next song,
this rutting elk

· · ·

this evening
wandering alone
between worlds

· · ·

rain, hail, meteors,
full moon atonement
fusatsu!

· · ·

a night bird sings
this world
and that world

· · ·

meeting the first light
after a long dark sit
dawn did not wake me

· · ·

one silver thread
shivering at dawn
a spider’s bridge

· · ·

temple bell ringing
inside or outside?
these old happy ears

· · ·

to vega meadow
I meet the steep rocky trail
an old friend

· · ·

on a solitary peak,
sitting among weeds and thorns
the old cloud hermit

· · ·

in autumn, leaves falling
in spring, blossoms falling
everyday, falling

· · ·

total silence,
present moment
broken by
a cluster fly

· · ·

walking on pins and needles
day in, day out
these well used feet

· · ·

heavy rain
muddy forest road
green valley of the refuge

· · ·

single drop falling
from a pine branch
jewel on buddha’s head

· · ·

northern flickers
drumming on
old aspens

· · ·

the first day of Spring
is hiding itself
beneath wet snow

· · ·

in white cold
a snow cloud slips
down jicarilla mountain

· · ·

noon breeze
pale green juniper
shivering

· · ·

cold and moist
late winter earth
an afternoon seat

· · ·

old body
aches and all
still here

· · ·

deep snow
my tracks disappear
into silence

· · ·

in the empty zendo
the silence is broken
by the sound of my heart
